WASHINGTON DC – Lily Eskelsen García, President of the National Education Association released the following statement personally endorsing Keith Ellison for DNC Chair.

The National Education Association is the largest labor union in the United States and represents nearly 3 million members.

“I am proud to personally support Congressman Keith Ellison to be the next Democratic National Committee Chair,” said Lily Eskelsen García. “I know he will be a unifying force in the Democratic Party. Keith’s emphasis and well-documented commitment to party building and grassroots organizing in every community is exactly what we need as the nation finds itself at a crossroad under the divisive Trump administration.

“Throughout the country, educators and public schools are facing historical attacks in state capitols. Legislatures are gutting education funding, privatizing public education, stealing away services from students, and making it harder for working people to earn a living by stripping away their rights to negotiate collectively. We need leadership that truly understands the challenges we are facing and how to communicate a path forward. Congressman Ellison is that leader. His ability to unify, energize and organize people at all levels while staying committed to standing up for students and working people who are coming under increasing attacks.”

“Teachers are so much more than just people who stand in front of the classroom,” said Keith Ellison. “They are the epitome of public servants. That's why I am so honored to receive the endorsement of National Education Association President Lily Eskelsen García. She's dedicated her life to standing up for students and working families. As Chair of the Democratic Party, I will make sure every Democrat and every educator has the tools and resources they need to fight attacks on public education, and to ensure every student has the opportunity to a quality education, regardless of their ZIP code. That means the DNC must institute more than a 50 state strategy. It needs a 3,143 county strategy, like the NEA. That's what I plan to do as DNC Chair, and I look forward to working with Lily and every other educator working for our children.”

Keith Ellison is endorsed by the AFL-CIO, SEIU, the Teamsters, United Steelworkers, American Federation of Government Employees, Communications Workers of America, UNITE HERE, and National Nurses United.

Keith is also endorsed by union presidents and leaders such as Lee Saunders of American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, Randi Weingarten of the American Federation of Teachers, Leo Gerard of United Steelworkers, Chris Shelton of Communications Workers of America, RoseAnn DeMoro of National Nurses United, Lawrence Hanley of Amalgamated Transit Union, Mark Dimondstein of American Postal Workers Union, Rev. and Terry L. Melvin of the Coalition of Black Trade Unionists and Secretary-Treasurer of the New York State AFL-CIO.

He is also endorsed by worker advocates Dolores Huerta, Co-Founder of the United Farm Workers Union, Linda Chavez Thompson, Executive Vice President, Emerita of the AFL-CIO and past Vice Chair of the Democratic National Committee, Maria Elena Durazo of UNITE HERE and Vice Chair of the Democratic National Committee, and Saru Jayaraman, Co-Founder of ROC United and ROC Action.
