WASHINGTON DC – Keith Ellison released the following statement after the Service Employees International Union recommended SEIU affiliated DNC Members and SEIU locals support Keith for DNC Chair.

SEIU is the second largest labor union in the United States and represents almost 1.9 million workers.

“When I think of what it means to fight for working people, I think of SEIU,” said Keith Ellison. “Whether it’s the janitor in working the graveyard shift, the nurse who is working a back to back, or the security guard, they have to know that Democrats are fighting for them. That’s what I want to do as DNC Chair, and that’s what will help Democrats take back those 1,000 seats we’ve lost since 2008. Because at the end of the day, when Democrats lose, bad things happen to good people. For decades, Republicans have been trying to roll back labor protections, lower wages, or make it harder to join a union. And every step of the way, SEIU has been there fighting for workers day in and day out. I welcome the SEIU’s support, and as DNC Chair, I will always stand with SEIU and the working people of America.”

Keith Ellison is endorsed by the AFL-CIO, the Teamsters, United Steelworkers, American Federation of Government Employees, Communications Workers of America, UNITE HERE, and National Nurses United.

Keith is also endorsed by union presidents and leaders such as Lee Saunders of American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, Randi Weingarten of the American Federation of Teachers, Leo Gerard of United Steelworkers, Chris Shelton of Communications Workers of America, RoseAnn DeMoro of National Nurses United, Lawrence Hanley of Amalgamated Transit Union, Mark Dimondstein of American Postal Workers Union, Rev. and Terry L. Melvin of the Coalition of Black Trade Unionists and Secretary-Treasurer of the New York State AFL-CIO.

He is also endorsed by worker advocates Dolores Huerta, Co-Founder of the United Farm Workers Union, Linda Chavez Thompson, Executive Vice President, Emerita of the AFL-CIO and past Vice Chair of the Democratic National Committee, Maria Elena Durazo of UNITE HERE and Vice Chair of the Democratic National Committee, and Saru Jayaraman, Co-Founder of ROC United and ROC Action.
